Now, a first-of-its-kind uranium enrichment project in Oak Ridge is poised to add a major new chapter. It will link federal R&D, state-led economic development, and specialized engineering talent into a single, high-impact build.

LIS Technologies Inc. (LIST) has announced plans for a laser-based uranium enrichment facility in Oak Ridge. It is a $1.38 billion investment that is expected to create more than 200 jobs. LIST was also selected for the program that uses federal purchasing power to incentivize new U.S.-sourced LEU production.

The project is planned for a 206-acre site formerly known as Duct Island. It is now called “LIST Island” and is located at the historic K-25 enrichment plant footprint, part of Oak Ridge’s legacy as a national hub for nuclear capability.

Oak Ridge is a strategic location with decades of institutional depth. It hosts the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), widely recognized as the nation’s largest multi-program science and technology laboratory.

Meanwhile California hosted its first statewide fusion energy summit, “Accelerating California’s Fusion Energy Economy,” where over 200 leaders from science, government, industry, and academia met to discuss how the state can transform fusion research into a scalable commercial energy sector.

Subject to licensing, permitting, and final investment decisions, LIST intends to begin site preparation and construction in 2026. Initial commercial operations are targeted to be before 2030.
