The Center for Advancing Innovation (CAI) teamed up with the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) on June 19th to promote the Freedom from Cancer Startup Challenge (FCSC), an initiative dedicated to advancing and commercializing 100 inventions for the treatment, prevention, and detection of cancer.
FCSC opens enrollment on August 1st and features inventions from over 40 hospitals and universities, as well as the federal government. Teams enter to build a company around a selected invention, and each winning team licenses the invention, creates a company, and pitches for seed funding.
CAI Founder and CEO, Rosemarie Truman, commented on the initiative in a press release, stating that, “In the immediate term, our team looks forward to driving the commercialization of cancer research into medicines that could make a significant impact on the quality of life of cancer patients and their families, reduce the economic burden of exorbitant cancer treatment costs, and perhaps free the world from cancer.”
In addition to recruiting teams, CAI is also interested in applications from advisors, judges, and mentors for the initiative. Interested teams are accepted on a rolling basis until December 29th.
