The China Institute is just months away from the finals of its very first Fashion Design Competition to take place on April 16th, 2018 at the China Institute in New York City. The Fashion Design Competition allows innovative designers to showcase their fashion design skills and creativity while also touting the beauty and culture of Chinese fashion.

The finalists will work under the mentorship of fashion designer David Leung in order to make a final capsule collection based on their design proposals. The judges will make their final decision for the winner after seeing all of their hard work at the China Institute Fashion Show. The winner will receive $10,000 and will be invited to appear as a special guest at the upcoming China Fashion Gala.

The judges, as well as the eleven finalists to compete in the competition were just announced. The judges include:

  • Bil Donovan, Dior’s Artist-in-Residence and fashion illustrator,
  • Hazel Clark, Professor of Design Studies and Chair of Fashion at Parsons School of Design,
  • Lyn Slater, cultural Influencer, model, writer, professor at Fordham University and founder of the “Accidental Icon” blog,
  • Peter Som, the inspirational designer and fashion consultant
  • Karen Van Godtsenhoven, Associate Curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

The eleven finalists are Guanyu Chen, Karen Heshi, Shenyue Huang, Zirui Huang, Anqi Jiang, Olga Lukianenko, Mia Rubin, Chu Wang,Tiantian Wang, Shalyn Webber, and Yanting & Yanchen Yao. 10 out of the 11 finalists are from the US.

The China institute, which was founded in 1926 by a group of Chinese and American educators, is the premier non-profit organization in America to focus exclusively on China. The China Institute advances a deeper understanding of China through programs in education, culture, business and art with the belief that cross-cultural understanding strengthens our global community.
