New Jersey Startup Ecosystem

New Jersey’s startup ecosystem is a thriving tech community of tech companies, entrepreneurs, and early-stage startups, driving innovation and economic growth. The supportive infrastructure includes a network of accelerators such as Newark Venture Partners, incubators such as the Commercialization Center for Innovative Technologies, University Centers of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer Offices, co-working spaces, angel investor groups, and venture capital firms

The State’s strategic location, close to New York City and Philadelphia, provides startup companies access to a vast array of resources. Key New Jersey tech hubs include Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, and Princeton.

The State’s entrepreneurial ecosystem boasts a concentration in biotech, pharma tech, fintech, and MedTech. It is home to some of the largest tech companies like Nokia Bell Labs, Audible, Cognizant, ADP, Universal Display Corporation, and Johnson & Johnson.

Access to capital is a key driver of startup activity, provided by angel investor groups such as JumpstartNJ,  venture capital firms, and growth equity firms such as Edison Partners.

The educational community has academic institutions such as universities that conduct research and facilitate technology commercialization including Princeton University, Rutgers University, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJIT, and others.

State government agencies support the startup economy through the New Jersey Economic Development Agency (NJEDA) with programs directly supporting startups that include business model development, training for business owners, a business helpline, and a Net Operating Loss program where startups may sell their losses to large corporations.

According to the NJEDA, the state has the highest concentration of scientists and engineers per square mile than anywhere else in the U.S.
