Boom Supersonic

Boom Supersonic, recognized for its efforts to reintroduce commercial supersonic flight, is now entering the AI infrastructure market.

The Denver-based company reported over $1.25 billion in backlog for its Superpower natural gas turbine business, named Crusoe as its first customer, and secured $300 million in funding to advance its energy and aerospace initiatives.

Founded in 2014, Boom Supersonic aims to make the world more accessible through faster travel. Now with Superpower, the company is expanding this into energy. It is positioning its natural gas turbine technology to reduce flight times and help scale next-generation AI infrastructure.

Boom’s entry into energy addresses the rising needs of AI data centers facing higher workloads. As high-density power is a key constraint for data center development, Boom’s Superpower enables rapid deployment and reliable operation in demanding environments.

Specifically, Boom claims Superpower delivers significantly better real-world price efficiency than traditional aeroderivative turbines. The system provides 42 megawatts of ISO-rated power in a shipping container-sized package. It also maintains full output in extreme heat, operates on clean natural gas with backup diesel, and can be rapidly deployed to meet urgent power needs.

These features address key challenges in AI data centers, including deployment speed, reliability, and geographic flexibility.

Timely Investor Support

Darsana Capital Partners led the Series B financing, with participation from Altimeter Capital, ARK Invest, Bessemer Venture Partners, Robinhood Ventures, and Y Combinator.

Investors were drawn to Boom’s capital-efficient approach. Darsana Capital, the lead investor, cited the company’s disciplined execution and dual-market strategy as key factors in its support.

In addition, the new capital will fund the development of Boom’s Symphony engine for its Overture supersonic airliner. Revenue from Superpower turbines is expected to support the aircraft’s certification and delivery.

Dual-use Technology

Boom entered the data center market through Crusoe, an energy-focused AI infrastructure company that became Superpower’s launch customer. The company ordered 29 turbines for its advanced AI data centers. Crusoe’s model focuses on deploying power where it is most efficient and immediately usable, making Superpower well-suited to its requirements.

Boom aims to increase turbine production to over four gigawatts annually by 2030. This is part of its goal of moving beyond a niche market. While still in early stages, the Superpower business represents a significant new industrial revenue stream. It offers a strategic hedge against the long timelines of aerospace certification.

American-based Manufacturing

Manufacturing will take place in the United States, supporting broader reindustrialization efforts. Boom reports that 95% of the parts for its Symphony engine core prototype are already in production, with testing scheduled to begin in 2026 at its Colorado facility.

Data from Superpower operations will inform Symphony’s development and accelerate validation of engine reliability for aviation.

A Bright Future

Demand for Boom’s Overture airliner continues to grow, with a reported order book of 130 aircraft, including orders and pre-orders from United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines. Overture is designed to fly at twice the speed of current subsonic jets over water and 50% faster over land using Boomless Cruise technology.

Through its client relationship with Crusoe, Boom is well-positioned in its entry into the data infrastructure segment of AI.
