The company’s collaboration with the New Jersey Economic Development Agency is a boost to the state’s program to attract AI companies for its innovation economy.
CoreWeave, a cloud computing company headquartered in Livingston, New Jersey, made headlines on March 28, 2025, with its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “CRWV.” The company raised $1.5 billion at $40 per share, securing a valuation of $23 billion—making it the largest AI-related IPO in history.
Founded in 2017 by former Wall Street traders Michael Intrator, Brian Venturo, and Brannin McBee, CoreWeave began as a cryptocurrency mining operation before pivoting in 2019 to become a specialized provider of GPU-based cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. Today, it operates 32 data centers and supports over 250,000 Nvidia GPUs, serving clients like Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI.
Despite the IPO’s scale, investor enthusiasm was tempered by concerns over CoreWeave’s financial sustainability. The company reported $1.92 billion in revenue in 2024—a staggering 737% increase from the previous year—but also posted a net loss of $863 million and holds approximately $8 billion in debt. Microsoft alone accounted for over 60% of CoreWeave’s 2024 revenue, raising questions about customer concentration risk.
Still, CoreWeave’s strategic moves are positioning it for long-term growth. In March 2025, it signed a five-year, $11.9 billion contract with OpenAI, which also acquired $350 million in CoreWeave shares through a private placement during the IPO. The company also acquired AI platform developer Weights & Biases for $1.7 billion, expanding its capabilities in the AI development lifecycle.
Anchoring Innovation: CoreWeave and the NJ AI Hub
Beyond its financial footprint, CoreWeave is playing a pivotal role in New Jersey’s broader innovation ecosystem. The company is a founding partner of the New Jersey AI Hub, a public-private initiative launched in collaboration with Princeton University, Microsoft, and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA).
Located in West Windsor at 619 Alexander Road—within the state’s so-called “innovation corridor”—the NJ AI Hub is designed as a collaborative ecosystem integrating world-class research, commercialization, and workforce development in AI.
CoreWeave, alongside its partners, is contributing to a $72 million investment into the initiative, including a planned NJ AI Venture Fund that will support early-stage innovation and AI commercialization.
The Hub will focus on three main pillars: advancing AI research across sectors like life sciences, climate resilience, and telecommunications; supporting startups through an AI accelerator; and strengthening AI education statewide through workforce training, curriculum development, and access to resources like Microsoft’s TechSpark program.
“This collaboration represents the best of what private-public partnerships can achieve,” said Brian Venturo, CoreWeave’s chief strategy officer. “Together, we’re advancing the future of technology while driving meaningful economic growth and strengthening New Jersey’s role as a leader in the global AI landscape.”
The NJ AI Hub adds another layer to CoreWeave’s deepening roots in the state. The company recently announced a $1.2 billion investment in a new data center at the Northeast Science and Technology (NEST) campus in Kenilworth, as part of a larger $5 billion joint venture to expand AI infrastructure across the U.S. This is just a few miles from L’Oreal Groupe’s recently announced construction of a research and innovation center.
CoreWeave: A Cornerstone of the East Coast AI Economy
Governor Phil Murphy has lauded CoreWeave as a model for the state’s AI ambitions. In July 2024, he signed legislation at CoreWeave’s Roseland office establishing the “Next New Jersey Program,” which allocates up to $500 million in tax credits to attract AI investment. “CoreWeave is not just participating in the AI revolution—we’re driving it,” said Venturo.
Despite market headwinds and a scaled-back IPO, CoreWeave’s public debut marks a significant milestone for both the company and New Jersey’s burgeoning tech sector.
With its deep ties to the state’s innovation infrastructure and a growing portfolio of AI partnerships, CoreWeave is poised to be a cornerstone of the East Coast’s AI economy.
