This International Women Day, celebrated on March 8th, Getty Images is offering insight into women’s lives and their work around the world through the newly expanded Empowerment collection, created by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
The collection features 2,000 high-quality, inspiring images of women at work, accessing and providing reproductive health information and services, and as active and dedicated members of their communities. The initiative focuses on women having opportunities to earn a living and also choosing whether to have children—as well as when.
This year, compilers of the collection chose to focus on women in Colombia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, and the US. Through photography, the Foundations hope to tell the stories of the lives and experiences of women, helping to explain their work and inspire action to work on today’s most pressing issues.
The images, many of which focus on how women’s productive lives at work are connected to their reproductive lives, are echoed by the work of The Hewlett Foundation, which gives grants to women in the workforce with children, and the Packard Foundation, which support reproductive health advocates and providers. Getty Images offers the photographs free of charge to noncommercial users, as well as licensing options to agencies and news organizations.
“We built upon the Images of Empowerment collection to amplify stories of women and youth who are actively engaged in their lives and communities,” said Packard Foundation Communications Officer Emily Bosworth. “The latest collection portrays leaders across Rwanda just as they are: in decision-making roles, accessing and providing quality reproductive health information and services, and with agency over their bodies and lives.”
