The one-year-old robotics startup is filling a market need for industrial companies and recently gained investor support for its next expansion stage.

Avatar Robotics has raised $6.5 million in Seed funding to expand its workforce platform, which combines humanoid robots, remote human operators, and artificial intelligence for industrial applications.

The San Francisco-based robotics startup announced the funding round on August 5. AlleyCorp led the Seed investment, following an earlier pre-seed round led by defy.vc. Additional investors include Headline, Henry Ford III, Refashiond, Paul Vogel, Jack Huffard, and Samuel Udotong.

Avatar Robotics is developing what it describes as an “unlimited workforce” for warehouses, logistics centers and manufacturing facilities. The company’s technology is designed to help businesses address persistent shortages of workers available for physically demanding, repetitive and difficult-to-staff jobs.

Growing concern among industrial companies about labor availability is driving demand for robots. A range of factors are impacting their acceptance. They include manufacturers reshoring operations, accelerating fulfillment expectations, and warehouse operators seeking to maintain around-the-clock productivity.

Avatar Robotics aims to provide companies with flexible labor capacity without requiring the rigid workflows and costly integrations often associated with traditional automation systems.

The company’s humanoid robots can perform tasks including picking, packing, kitting, sorting, cycle counting, and moving materials. The robots are supported by remote human operators. This allows them to begin completing customer workflows while Avatar continues developing greater levels of AI-driven autonomy.

“Avatar Robotics gives businesses access to scalable industrial labor, while enabling workers to operate fleets of robots remotely from safer and more comfortable environments,” Avatar Robotics Founder and CEO Colin Webb said in the funding announcement.

Webb said advances in affordable robotics, high-speed connectivity and autonomous systems are creating opportunities to build a new type of workforce. It is capable of supporting industrial operations 24 hours a day.

Avatar Robotics Expands in Live Warehouse Environments

Since launching in December 2025, Avatar Robotics says its systems have helped pack, sort and ship more than 900,000 products. Its robots have been deployed in live customer environments, including operations for a leading global beauty retailer.

The company has also entered a post-pilot expansion with a multibillion-dollar warehouse operator. That engagement will use Avatar robots to support picking and sorting workflows, while other customer deployments are reportedly underway.

Avatar’s human-in-the-loop model is central to its strategy. Remote operators can guide robots through real-world tasks from the first day of deployment, helping customers gain immediate labor capacity. At the same time, the robots collect operating data that can be used to train robotic foundation models and improve autonomous performance.

AlleyCorp Principal Brannon Jones said Avatar Robotics has established strong relationships with its initial customers and is already producing value in active industrial workflows.

Jones also pointed to the importance of the robot-control data generated by Avatar’s deployments. Large volumes of real-world operating data could help the company train more capable AI systems. This would gradually allow one human operator to oversee larger fleets of robots.

Amy Yin, a partner at defy.vc, said Avatar’s model provides a practical bridge between remotely operated robotics and fully autonomous systems.

“The path to full robotic autonomy will require both better hardware and massive amounts of real-world data,” Yin said.

Funding For a Critical Next Step

Avatar Robotics plans to use its new capital to expand customer deployments and accelerate autonomy software development. Steps also include scaling its robot fleet and growing its engineering and operations teams.

The company’s team includes professionals with experience at Cruise, Apple, Tesla, Intuitive Surgical and Unity. They join researchers connected to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Webb is an MIT graduate who delivered a commencement address at the university and has worked on autonomous drones, self-driving vehicles and other AI-powered systems. He previously founded an AI company with Nenye Anagbogu, who has joined him again at Avatar Robotics.

Looking ahead, the company envisions millions of Avatar robots operating across warehouses, factories, mines, farms and large infrastructure projects. Its longer-term goal is to make industrial-grade labor available on demand while allowing workers around the world to operate physical systems remotely.

By combining immediate human control with continuously improving autonomy, Avatar Robotics is positioning its platform as a new layer of infrastructure for the physical economy.
