The company’s recently issued patent spotlights Alabama’s commitment to innovation and serves as a magnet for those in medical and healthcare technology, including orthopedic physicians.
Simparo Inc., doing business as Simparo Surgical, announced receipt of its fourth U.S. patent issued on June 23, 2026.
Simparo’s intellectual property portfolio now includes four issued patents covering its suture-tensioning system and planned applications across multiple areas of orthopedic surgery.
It marks another milestone for the company and Alabama’s expanding innovation ecosystem.
Headquartered in Mobile, Simparo develops orthopedic devices and surgical methods for the upper and lower extremities. Its products are intended to simplify surgical procedures without sacrificing stability while also supporting improved patient experiences.
The company has received investment support from Innovate Alabama and entrepreneurial assistance from Hatch Fairhope.

The latest patent protects technology designed to address a challenge associated with thumb carpometacarpal, or Thumb CMC, reconstruction. Traditional reconstruction procedures may require surgeons to harvest a tendon from a second location, drill tunnels into the bone, and rely on approximation-based tensioning techniques. These steps can increase the time and complexity involved in completing the procedure.
The Thumb CMC joint, located at the base of the thumb, plays an important role in gripping, pinching, and other routine hand movements.
Simparo’s patented Falcon Suture Clutch uses a one-way cinching mechanism that allows a surgeon to tighten and complete the repair incrementally until the desired level of tension is achieved. The company says the technology is designed to make basal joint reconstruction faster, more controlled and more reproducible.
Simparo Patent Highlights Alabama Innovation Ecosystem
Simparo’s fourth patent also reflects the growing network of organizations working to help technology companies launch and scale within Alabama.
Innovate Alabama is the state’s first statewide public-private partnership focused on technology, small business and innovation. Created to implement recommendations developed by the Alabama Innovation Commission, the organization supports policies, programs and investments intended to help entrepreneurs build companies and remain in the state.
Led by founding CEO Cynthia Crutchfield, Innovate Alabama works with an 11-member board of innovation leaders appointed by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey. Its initiatives are designed to advance emerging industries, encourage technology development and strengthen the state’s long-term economic competitiveness.
Simparo has also received support from Hatch Fairhope, a business resource hub serving technology-based entrepreneurs in Baldwin County. Located in downtown Fairhope, Hatch provides startups with access to training, business resources, mentorship and networking opportunities.
Together, organizations such as Innovate Alabama and Hatch Fairhope are helping establish a more connected Alabama innovation ecosystem. That ecosystem brings together startups, investors, universities, healthcare professionals, economic development organizations and public-sector leaders to support the commercialization of new technologies.
For Simparo, the goal is to demonstrate that advanced medical devices can be designed, protected and brought to market from Alabama.

Simparo is encouraging hand surgeons throughout the state to learn more about its locally developed orthopedic technology. The company believes Alabama physicians represent important potential partners in evaluating and adopting innovations created within the state.
