In honor of his contribution to the additive manufacturing, MIT Professor Emanuel “Ely” Sachs, inventor of binder jetting and co-founder of Massachusetts– based Desktop Metal, has been awarded the 2019 SME Industry Achievement Award. Sachs was instrumental in developing the concept of 3D printing, allowing engineers to move beyond prototyping to create and produce final products, among his many other innovation successes in the additive manufacturing industry.
Established by SME’s Additive Manufacturing Community over a decade ago, the award is given to an individual, team, or company for achievements that have been implemented or deployed in a commercial or industrial environment. Sachs was an ideal candidate as he and his colleagues developed breakthrough 3D printing and binder jet technology, both now valuable tools within the manufacturing industry.
Desktop Metal, Inc. works to manufacture end-to-end 3D printing, while eliminating challenges that arise, such as speed, cost, or quality. With the binder jet invention, the company is able to produce the lowest cost per part with the highest capacity of any metal 3D printing system.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized with this award,” said Sachs in a press statement. “I find myself incredibly fortunate to have carved out a career in such rewarding and challenging work surrounded by like-minded individuals at MIT, Desktop Metal, and beyond.”
