The stealth startup emerges from The Toyota Research Institute with funding to produce robots that understand existing manufacturing processes to achieve close collaboration with the employees who operate production facilities.
Walden Robotics has emerged from stealth with $300 million in funding to accelerate the deployment of general-purpose robots across manufacturing, logistics, and other industrial environments.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Physical AI company announced that its seed funding round values Walden Robotics at $1.1 billion.
The round was co-led by Toyota and Deviation Capital, with participation from NVIDIA, Boeing, AE Ventures, Samsung Ventures, Prologis Ventures and CoreWeave Ventures.
Additional financial investors include Calibrate Ventures, Colle Capital, Shine Capital, NextView Ventures, Squarepoint Capital, One Madison Group, KAS Venture Partners and Menlo Ventures.
The significant investment reflects growing interest in Physical AI, an emerging field that combines artificial intelligence with machines capable of interacting with and learning from the physical world.
General-Purpose Robots Designed for Real Work
Walden Robotics is developing general-purpose robots that can begin performing useful industrial work alongside employees and then improve through experience.
Rather than focusing exclusively on highly repetitive processes that have traditionally been automated, Walden is targeting tasks that are difficult to automate using conventional robotics systems.
The company’s robots are intended to allow skilled employees to delegate physically demanding or time-consuming tasks while continuing to focus on judgment, craftsmanship and problem-solving.
Walden is working with strategic partners in automotive manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductors, electronics, logistics and life sciences. These industries are experiencing growing pressure from labor shortages, changing demographics, rising production demands and global competition.
By introducing adaptable robots into existing facilities, Walden aims to help companies increase productivity without requiring them to redesign entire production environments around automation.
Walden Robotics Emerges from Toyota Research Institute
Walden Robotics launched from Toyota Research Institute in January 2026 and immediately began working with customers across multiple industries.
Since February, the company’s general-purpose robots have been performing production work at a Toyota plant in North America. According to Walden, the robots moved from an initial pilot program to real production work in less than two months.
That deployment is helping Walden position itself as a robotics company focused not only on research breakthroughs, but also on delivering measurable value inside active industrial facilities.
“Core advances in Physical AI, and all of the excitement and attention surrounding it, has made disruptive change possible,” said Walden Robotics co-founder and CEO Dr. Russ Tedrake.
Tedrake is also a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and previously served as senior vice president of Large Behavior Models at Toyota Research Institute.
He emphasized that successful industrial robotics requires more than advanced artificial intelligence. It also demands an understanding of existing manufacturing processes and close collaboration with the employees and companies that operate production facilities.
Large Behavior Models Power Continuous Learning
Walden’s technology builds on more than a decade of artificial intelligence and robotics research conducted by members of its founding team.
That research includes Diffusion Policy and Large Behavior Models, or LBMs. These models enable robots to learn new behaviors, respond to changing conditions and improve through repeated real-world operation.
Large Behavior Models are designed to help robots generalize their knowledge across multiple physical tasks rather than being programmed for a single, narrowly defined function.
Walden combines these AI models with its own robotic hardware, real-world deployments and teams of engineering and operations experts. This full-stack approach gives the company control over the software, hardware and implementation process.
The company was founded by robotics and AI experts with experience at Toyota Research Institute, MIT, Stanford University and Amazon.
Toyota Backs Human-Centered Industrial Automation
Toyota’s involvement extends beyond its role as a lead investor. The automaker is developing a strategic partnership with Walden to explore how adaptable robots can support employees and improve manufacturing operations.
Toyota Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima said Walden’s robots stand out because they can deliver value immediately while continuing to learn.
He connected Walden’s approach to Toyota manufacturing principles such as kaizen, or continuous improvement, and jidoka, which emphasizes building quality and human oversight into automated processes.
Deviation Capital Founding Partner Colin Beirne also highlighted Walden’s combination of robotics research, production hardware and operational expertise.
As artificial intelligence moves beyond digital applications, investors and industrial companies are increasingly focused on systems that can perform useful work in physical environments.
With $300 million in funding, a $1.1 billion valuation and robots already operating inside a Toyota manufacturing plant, Walden Robotics enters the market as one of the best-funded startups pursuing general-purpose industrial robotics.
