The seventh fund seeks to transform patient healthcare by funding startups working on breakthroughs in the areas of medical devices, diagnostics, digital health, and pharmaceuticals.
Venture Investors Health Fund (VI), one of the Midwest’s longest-tenured healthcare-focused venture capital firms, has announced the close of its seventh fund, raising $80 million in venture capital funding to support breakthrough healthcare startups.
The new fund advances VI’s mission to transform care by backing early-stage companies that turn research into scalable healthcare solutions.
A Major Funding Milestone for Healthcare Innovation
The $80 million fund closes at a time when demand for more personalized, cost-effective care is accelerating.
With over four decades of investing experience, VI is uniquely positioned to identify and back entrepreneurs who are pioneering technologies that shift how patients receive treatment.
“By focusing on technology that truly transforms how patients receive care, we aim to accelerate the translation of decades of research into real-world impact for patients and their physicians,” said Jim Adox, Managing Partner at Venture Investors Health Fund.
The seventh fund will target startups in medical devices, diagnostics, digital health, and pharmaceuticals. The investment focus is to transform care pathways.
Investing in Healthcare Startups That Redefine Care
Unlike generalist firms, VI invests only in healthcare innovations that redefine patient outcomes. Recent portfolio companies illustrate this mission:
- EarliTec has developed a novel, objective eye-tracking system to diagnose autism faster than the current standard of care.
- HistoSonics, which uses sound energy to noninvasively destroy tumors, offers patients a less invasive alternative to surgery.
With $80 million in new capital, VI will support entrepreneurs from university research labs to the marketplace.
Since its founding in the 1980s, Venture Investors Health Fund has invested in more than 80 healthcare startups, with 11 successful exits valued between $250 million and $2.25 billion.
Portfolio companies include ThirdWave Technologies, TomoTherapy, and IntraLase.
These exits demonstrate VI’s ability to identify and cultivate high-growth companies that attract acquisition and IPO opportunities. VI leverages its strong syndicate partnerships and deep operational expertise.
Deep Roots in the Midwest Venture Capital Ecosystem
While much venture capital is based in Silicon Valley, VI has built its reputation in the Midwest, home to top research universities such as the University of Wisconsin–Madison and University of Michigan.
Additionally, the Fund’s access to healthcare giants such as Epic, GE, and Exact Sciences enhances its pipeline of opportunities, allowing VI to collaborate directly with researchers, clinicians, and industry partners.
Kelly Sexton, Associate Vice President for Research – Innovation Partnerships and Economic Impact at the University of Michigan, underscored VI’s role:
“By partnering early on with academic innovators, Jim Adox and VI have consistently helped accelerate lab discoveries into tangible patient outcomes, which in turn strengthens our regional biotech ecosystem.”
The new fund will allow VI to deepen its engagement in key Midwest markets, including Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee, and Ann Arbor.
Venture Investors Health Fund differentiates itself by combining financial backing with a healthcare-focused approach, ensuring that portfolio companies receive not only capital but also strategic guidance from industry veterans. This model accelerates time-to-market while strengthening long-term patient and physician outcomes.
Midwest as a Growth Engine for Healthcare Startups
The Midwest is emerging as a growth engine for healthcare innovation. Timely funding helps local startups and university spinouts gain traction to bring their innovations to market.
From oncology and diagnostics to mental health and digital platforms, VI’s portfolio reflects the breadth of healthcare innovation now underway.
New Era for Healthcare Funding
As cost pressures continue across the healthcare system and patients seek greater access to personalized treatment, early-stage companies have a critical role in delivering new solutions.
For VI, the $80 million healthcare fund represents more than just capital—it is a commitment to reshaping the future of care delivery.
By continuing to back visionary entrepreneurs, the firm is helping to ensure that the next generation of technologies improves lives, reduces costs, and makes healthcare more equitable.
