Data science partnership platform data.org in collaboration with Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and The Rockefeller Foundation just announced an open call for breakthrough ideas that leverage the power of data science to aid in the recovery from COVID-19. The $10 Million Inclusive Growth and Recovery Challenge seeks innovative and scalable solutions from around the world to assist in the daunting challenges facing individuals and communities impacted by COVID-19.
The organizers believe that the COVID-19 crisis has brought to the forefront the vulnerability of individuals and communities to economic shocks and that data science has an important role in addressing these global challenges.
“Coming out of the COVID-19 crisis, we need to double down on ensuring that economic growth is inclusive and that the economically vulnerable have a path to greater financial security and resilience,” said Michael Froman, vice chairman of Mastercard.
Those seeking to compete, whether individuals or teams, should have extensive data science experience, and any innovative idea should use data science to address social issues and advance recovery. Some challenging areas include gaining financial security, increasing the economic mobility of workers, helping micro and small businesses access capital, and furthering economic development. Solutions should emphasize a charitable impact and address inclusive growth challenges around the world. Up to ten winners will share in the $10 million in prizes that includes receiving data science talent, software, training, funding and other support to launch and scale their proposed ideas.
The application process began on May 19th with submissions to be reviewed by expert judges in collaboration with data.org’s technical partner, DataKind. In the second phase selected finalists will receive support to develop a more detailed proposal that includes a virtual interview. The deadline for initial proposals to the Challenge is July 17, 2020.
