The inaugural Fund is part of the transformation of the state’s innovation ecosystem that has experienced an influx of manufacturing reinvestment, a growing biotech sector, growth in technology-driven services, and a burst of onshoring opportunities.
In just twelve months, The O.H.I.O. Fund, a private investment firm, has emerged as a major driver of capital formation and economic momentum across the Buckeye State, announcing the close of its Ohio Institutional Impact Investment Fund (“Impact Fund”) at $106 million.
Combined with its other fundraising efforts, the firm raised a remarkable $238 million in commitments in its inaugural year—signaling that Ohio’s investment ecosystem is gaining both depth and national attention.
Of the total, $195 million went into the Fund’s two core investment vehicles—the now-closed Impact Fund and the evergreen Ohio High Growth Investment Opportunities Fund—while an additional $43 million was raised through special purpose vehicles (SPVs) enabling co-investment in select deals.
Importantly, nearly all of the 106 investors who participated are Ohio-based, underscoring the state’s ability to mobilize its own financial community to fuel growth from within.
“We’re doing what we said we’ll do—invest across the state, build a great team, and deliver results. Promises made, promises kept,” said Mark Kvamme, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of The O.H.I.O. Fund.
Strategic Capital for a State at an Inflection Point
The O.H.I.O. Fund’s investment thesis is rooted in the belief that Ohio is at a historic inflection point. Over the past decade, the state has seen an influx of manufacturing reinvestment, a burgeoning biotech sector, growth in technology-driven services, and a surge in onshoring opportunities.
Yet, as Ray Leach, President of The O.H.I.O. Fund, notes, capital has not always been readily available to scale homegrown companies.
“There’s a wave of companies in Ohio ready to grow. Historically, these kinds of companies have been held back by limited access to the capital that could support their growth. We’re here to change that—and the market is responding,” said Leach.
By focusing on high-potential companies and infrastructure projects, the Fund is not just deploying capital—it is shaping Ohio’s future economic landscape. Its investments are strategically spread across industries and regions, from advanced manufacturing in the northeast to biotech in Cincinnati and workforce solutions in Columbus.
Notable Investments Driving Statewide Impact
In its first year, the Fund made 19 investments. These span advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, logistics, workforce technology, and real estate—reflecting a commitment to diversification and broad-based impact.
Eagle Electronics (Solon) – A leader in IoT and automotive-grade cellular modules, Eagle is advancing technology critical to connected vehicles and industrial applications. Its innovations are helping position Ohio as a hub for automotive and electronics manufacturing.
JucaBio (Cincinnati) – This biotech startup specializes in identifying, acquiring, and advancing early-stage novel therapeutics targeting areas of high unmet medical need. Its unique model accelerates the path from lab discovery to commercialization—strengthening Ohio’s position in the life sciences.
Innosource (Dublin)– Transforming into a technology-forward workforce solutions provider, Innosource is using AI and advanced analytics to improve operational efficiency for employers. Its evolution reflects Ohio’s growing expertise in AI-driven business solutions.
Beyond operating companies, the Fund has made strategic real estate and infrastructure acquisitions—over 3,000 acres of land intended for next-generation technology developments and corporate expansion.
This positions Ohio to attract future industrial and innovation projects at scale.
Building a High-Caliber Team and Network
From its launch with four founding partners, The O.H.I.O. Fund has expanded to include three full-time employees and two special advisors—one focused on real estate investments and another on deal flow and fundraising.
Equally important is its Advisory Board of respected Ohio business leaders:
- Alex Fischer (Columbus)
- Jim Hoffman (Toledo)
- Tony Manna (Akron)
- Bob Smith (Cleveland)
- George Vincent (Cincinnati)
This network provides deep market knowledge, statewide reach, and connections that enable the Fund to identify promising opportunities and support portfolio companies with more than just capital.
Catalyst for the Ohio Innovation Ecosystem
The O.H.I.O. Fund’s first-year results highlight a pivotal shift in Ohio’s entrepreneurial and investment environment. Historically, high-potential startups and expansion-stage companies often left the state in search of capital. By mobilizing local institutional and private investors, the Fund is reversing this trend, keeping talent, innovation, and returns within Ohio.
This capital injection also complements other developments in the state’s Innovation ecosystem:
- Onshoring and reshoring trends are driving manufacturing expansion.
- Favorable state policies are encouraging investment in energy, infrastructure, and technology.
- AI adoption is accelerating in sectors from manufacturing to workforce solutions.
By aligning with these trends, the Fund is ensuring that Ohio is not just participating in national growth waves but leading in select strategic sectors.
Looking Ahead: Scaling Impact in Year Two
With the Impact Fund now closed, The O.H.I.O. Fund will continue deploying capital from its evergreen fund and SPVs, targeting opportunities in:
- Artificial intelligence and automation
- Energy availability and infrastructure
- Advanced manufacturing and logistics
- Life sciences and biotech
- Real estate developments that attract high-growth businesses
The firm will also deepen its role as a connector between Ohio’s capital providers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers—ensuring that growth-oriented companies have the resources and network to scale effectively.
As Ohio continues to attract corporate expansions, research activity, and top-tier talent, the role of locally focused institutional capital becomes increasingly important.
The O.H.I.O. Fund’s rapid success suggests that investors see not just the potential, but the inevitability, of Ohio’s rise as a national leader in innovation and economic competitiveness.
