The Edge Internet is an emerging industry that involves moving computing and communication resources in the network’s center and origin clouds to the edge, in effect moving it closer to the user. A new report from Chetan Sharma Consulting, called “Edge Internet Economy: The Multi-Trillion Dollar Ecosystem Opportunity,” explains how companies can start using Edge Internet immediately to create new revenue, forecasting that the market will be worth over $4.1 trillion by 2030 due in part to new technology.
The report details how Edge Internet will impact many types of delay-sensitive applications such as video streaming, autonomous vehicles, drones and telemedicine and make them more readily available to users in real time. Sometimes referred to as edge computing, the technology allows data to travel at high speeds without having to first reach a cloud or data center.
Contrasted next to popular 5G technology, an emerging mobile network technology, many companies are implementing Edge Internet on existing 4G networks instead of waiting until 5G networks are widely available. Mobile operators, application providers, and tower companies can used Edge Internet to differentiate themselves and optimize delivery economics.
“Chetan’s research is proof that the Edge Internet Economy will impact the global technology ecosystem,” said AlefEdge Founder and CEO, Ganesh Sundaram in a press statement. “The Edge Internet is a fundamental shift that we are witnessing today. In fact, this shift has been years in the making—we have seen a new class of applications, optimizations and economics with every generation of network technology. The Edge Internet has the potential to fundamentally impact every generation of technology and horizontally impact every trillion dollar industry in our economy!”
