Navigant Research has been tracking key segments of the global micro-grid market for almost a decade, and their current report titled, “Market Data: Micro-grids,” looks at future growth, business models, and segments by world region. Their most recent assessment projects the global micro-grid market to reach $30.9 billion in 2027.
Today micro-grids are viewed as networks of electricity users having a local energy supply that are usually attached to larger national grids, while being able to work independently of them.
Peter Asmus, Navigant research director, provides a summary of micro-grid deployments in a recent press statement, saying that, “The greatest micro-grid deployment growth is expected in the commercial and industrial segment due to declining costs of key micro-grid enabling technologies as well as the emergence of new business models. While North America has been the historical market leader regionally, Asia Pacific maintains and then increases its leadership position throughout the 10-year forecast horizon.”
The report also sizes the market regionally and globally for the first time for four business model categories: government funding, utility rate based financing, owner financing, and energy-as-a-service.
In order make their study accurate and comprehensive, Navigant included remote systems deemed as micro-grids in decades past.
