The company’s scalable TRISO fuel production will meet the surging demand of AI-powered data centers.

With a team of over two dozen professionals with 150+ years of DOE lab experience, Standard Nuclear isn’t just building a company—it’s building the backbone of the U.S. advanced nuclear ecosystem.

Enabling the AI-Nuclear Convergence

Standard Nuclear’s rise comes at a pivotal time. The confluence of AI’s energy needs and next-generation reactor capabilities is setting the stage for a new era.

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries and drives explosive data growth, the energy demands of AI-powered data centers are surging. Meeting these demands with sustainable, resilient, and scalable energy is now a national priority.

Stepping boldly into this moment, Standard Nuclear has emerged from stealth by purchasing at auction the assets of bankrupt Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation.  Its $42 million funding round was led by venture capital firm Decisive Point with the participation of Andreessen Horowitz and others to position nuclear energy at the center of the AI-powered future.

The Oak Ridge–based company is pioneering industrial-scale production of TRISO nuclear fuel, the most robust nuclear fuel on Earth, for advanced nuclear reactors.

With the rise of energy-hungry AI data centers and growing electrification across sectors, Standard Nuclear’s emergence is expected to be a game-changer for the energy landscape in the U.S. and beyond.

Powering AI’s Energy-Hungry Future with Advanced Nuclear

AI requires vast amounts of reliable electricity. According to industry estimates, data centers could consume up to 20% of global electricity by 2030, driven in large part by the exponential growth of generative AI and real-time analytics.

Traditional grid systems, dominated by intermittent renewables or fossil fuels, are struggling to scale with this demand.

That’s where advanced nuclear comes in—and TRISO fuel is key. Standard Nuclear is now the only independent, reactor-agnostic producer of TRISO fuel in the United States, filling a crucial gap in the nuclear energy supply chain.

This reactor-neutral model positions the company to support the full ecosystem of next-generation reactors—including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and microreactors—that can bring clean, resilient energy closer to AI infrastructure hubs.

Building a Domestic Supply Chain for Advanced Nuclear Fuel

Standard Nuclear is headquartered at a historically significant nuclear site—the former K-25 complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Its 36.8-acre campus hosts 19,000 square feet of fully equipped, commercial-scale, NRC-permitted radiological facilities dedicated to TRISO fuel production.

This is not a concept—Standard Nuclear is already manufacturing fuel, fulfilling contracts, and scaling fast.

In just the first quarter of 2025, the company booked $5 million in revenue and secured a major fuel offtake agreement totaling over 1 MTU of fuel, with an additional 1.5 MTU in negotiations.

That pipeline represents over $100 million in projected fuel sales for 2027—underscoring the urgent demand from commercial and government customers alike.

Standard Nuclear’s clientele includes Radiant Industries, Antares, Nano Nuclear Energy, Jimmy Energy, as well as agencies like the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Defense (DoD).

These partnerships reflect the strategic importance of having a reliable, U.S.-based source of advanced nuclear fuel—a mission that’s also backed by top investors like Decisive Point, Andreessen Horowitz, and Washington Harbour Partners.

Why TRISO Fuel Matters

TRISO—short for Tristructural Isotropic—is a cutting-edge nuclear fuel composed of tiny uranium kernels encapsulated in layers of carbon and ceramic.

Each particle is about the size of a poppy seed but contains its own containment system, making TRISO virtually meltdown-proof and ideally suited for high-temperature reactors.

This makes TRISO the preferred fuel for advanced nuclear technologies being developed to serve both terrestrial and space-based applications. It has been rigorously tested by DOE national labs like INL and ORNL, and its unparalleled safety profile earned a safety endorsement from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2019.

“These reactors can’t run without fuel, and we’re here to ensure there are no uncertainties in that supply,” said Dr. Kurt Terrani, CEO of Standard Nuclear and former DOE scientist. “We’re not just delivering TRISO at scale—we’re doing it cost-effectively to support a competitive and sustainable reactor industry.”

A Strategic Asset for Energy Independence

Beyond supporting AI and industrial energy needs, Standard Nuclear’s mission aligns with national energy security.

The U.S. currently depends on foreign entities—some geopolitical adversaries—for segments of the nuclear fuel supply chain. By anchoring TRISO production domestically, Standard Nuclear is reducing that dependency and fortifying a strategically vital sector.

“As the demand for power accelerates, nuclear is a clear and practical solution,” said Thomas Hendrix, General Partner at Decisive Point and Executive Chairman of Standard Nuclear. “With this funding round, we’re accelerating our growth and filling the domestic supply gap.”

Microreactors and SMRs powered by TRISO can be co-located with data centers, deployed in remote regions, or integrated into decentralized grids—delivering dependable power precisely where it’s needed.

This model complements the intermittent nature of renewables and enhances grid stability, enabling the scalable, always-on power that AI systems require.

And with Standard Nuclear producing fuel independent of any one reactor design, the broader industry is better equipped to scale fast—without supply chain friction.

The Future is Powered by TRISO

The clean energy future—and the AI revolution that depends on it—will be fueled by innovation, infrastructure, and independence. Standard Nuclear stands at the intersection of all three.

With its industrial-scale TRISO fuel production, reactor-agnostic model, and strategic domestic focus, the company is charting a path toward reliable, secure, and abundant energy for the digital age.

As AI accelerates the pace of innovation, Standard Nuclear is ensuring the energy supply chain can keep up—with nuclear fuel that’s not just advanced, but ready.
