In its eighteenth edition of “Technology, Media, and Telecommunications Predictions,” Deloitte makes several predictions on technological advancements and trends for 2019. Among many insights, the report addresses how AI will become central to businesses, how 5G technology will provide better communication systems for consumers, and how the eSports market continues to expand. The most notable prediction is the foreseen rapid growth of the smart speaker market.
The smart speaker industry is projected to reach $7 billion in 2019, becoming the fastest-growing connected device category in history. The average price for speakers will be around $43 and Deloitte predicts that sales will reach 164 million units, with industry revenues increasing by 63 percent within the next year.
Deloitte predicts that 25 wireless operators will release 5G service, the latest technology of cellular mobile connections, serving over 1 million consumers in 2019, and 15 to 20 million in 2020. Additionally, companies will continue to incorporate AI into their business models, with over 70 percent of businesses in 2019 using cloud-based enterprise software and 60 percent creating AI applications. By 2020, the penetration rate of AI within enterprise software and development services will be over 80 percent.
60 percent of North American men ages 18-34 who watch sports on TV will also bet on sports and the North American eSports industry will expand by 35 percent powered by advertising, broadcast licensing, and franchise sales. The report also asserts the continued relevance of radio, with 85 percent of adults in developed countries listening weekly.
Quantum computing, computers that are built on quantum mechanics, will provide immense revenue opportunity and grow to be a $50 billion a year market by 2030. Additionally, with the increase of 3D printable materials made available within the last five years, sales of 3D printers and services will grow 12.5 percent annually each year by 2020.
