Smart dog technology startup Fi was launched by founders Jonathan Bensamoun and Loren Kirkby in 2017 with the goal of enhancing the relationship between owners and their dogs. Just three plus years later the startup has completed a $30 million Series B raise and has laid out their plans to expand their executive team and bring on top technology talent.
Bensamoun from Square and Kirkby from Dropcam and Google/Nest have the experience and skills a tech startup requires. They built cutting-edge technology that was critical for the introduction of the first LTE-M enabled GPS tracking collar in 2019. Within two years Fi’s collars empowered millions of dog parents with insights about their dogs’ whereabouts and behavior.
The recent funding has enabled the founders to expand their startup and advance their dog technology. They announced the addition of talented individuals from high flying unicorns. Charles Nicholson is leaving Alphabet, Ranjeet Mankikar is leaving Amazon Lab 126 and Nathan Jordan with a deep and extensive technology is joining from Uber.
“We are thrilled to be joined by tech leaders from multibillion-dollar public companies who share our enthusiasm for elevating dog ownership through superior technology,” said Bensamoun. “Charles, Ranjeet, and Nathan epitomize the expert self-starters that have made Fi what it is since day one, and I am excited to see them take it to the next level.”
The three new team members will help take Fi’s smart dog technology forward:
- Nicholson will oversee the building the code that runs on Fi’s hardware, using his twenty years plus years of experience constructing software spanning video games, fintech, ML research, and medical devices. .
- Mankikar will serve as Director of Supply Chain & Ops, having also held positions at Noon Home, Nest, and Intel Corporation, and
- Jordan has been engaged on various large-scale infrastructure projects and also served as the founding engineer on a team building their in-house customer support system.
“I left Amazon to join Fi because as a pet owner myself, I absolutely love the product,” said Mankikar, Director of Supply Chain & Ops. “I know from experience that coming up with ideas is very easy but executing on them is difficult; I think the Fi team is going about it the right way and will be a fantastic success.”
Early success came about at Fi through the creative and innovative technology envisioned by the two founders. In addition to laying claim of being the first tracking collar to use the LTE-M cellular network, their tech uses three constellations of satellites to maximize the tracking speed and accuracy of the Fi Collar.
The collars also offer a very important feature for dog owners, escape detection. Fi determined that the critical factor in a dog’s recovery is the speed at which the owner is notified of the escape. Fi’s proprietary algorithms quickly detect when a dog escapes and provides prompt notification to the owners.
Those outside of tech and the funding arena may be skeptical that a startup based on dog technology can be scaled and receive outside funding, but those in-the-know realize that such a high caliber team indicates its great prospects for success.
