A new second generation robot dining companion called Obi is now available to individuals who lack upper extremity function, enabling them to eat meals more efficiently and giving them greater access to social dining. The robot, designed by robotics company DESIN based in Dayton, Ohio follows on the company’s first-generation Obi with upgrades and advancements to the robot’s arm that improves user experience.

For people who cannot feed themselves DESIN’s robotic assistant has a smooth motion, long run times, and reliability that gives them more control of their food selection and pace of eating. Nearly all aspects of the robot’s arm were redesigned during the product development for the new model as the company moves to expand the usage of Obi.

The second generation Obi will also now be available in nursing homes and assisted living centers, where this dining companion brings great value to both staff and residents. Users now have more independence while eating and staff can increase productivity in other areas, creating more opportunities for revenue.

“This is the 21stcentury – there is no excuse for the absence of a technology that addresses a basic human need like eating.  When people are empowered to improve their health and well-being, everyone wins,” asserted Jon Dekar, Founder and CEO of DESIN.
