The grant recipient pioneered the world’s first smart, refillable, and fully implantable medical device for direct medicine delivery to the brain.
Under the leadership of Governor Wes Moore, Maryland’s Build Our Future Innovation Infrastructure Pilot Program made its first grant to CraniUS™, an R&D company focused on groundbreaking diagnostics and treatments for patients with chronic brain disease.
The $9 million program launched last year supports Maryland’s strategic industry sectors by funding transformative projects. Matching grants of up to $2 million are awarded to projects demonstrating a substantial impact on growth and innovation within the state.
CraniUS™ was one of the companies that received funding in the pilot round announced last week. The medical device company will use the funds to expand the company’s research capabilities and accelerate product development into human studies. It joins other fund recipients as contributors to Maryland’s innovation ecosystem.
“We are thrilled and grateful to receive this support from the State of Maryland,” said Mike Maglin, CEO of CraniUS™. “This grant is not just a recognition of our groundbreaking work, but a testament to the state’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting high-impact projects. With this funding, we are poised to make significant strides in our mission to develop life-changing neurotechnology solutions.”
The three-year-old company based in Baltimore, MD is a byproduct of the emerging field known as “Neuroplastic and Reconstructive Surgery”.
Dr. Chad Gordon pioneered the technology with seven patents issued to date for groundbreaking work in skull-embedded neurotechnology. It is part of an expansive new platform in neurological medicines to be safely delivered directly to the brain to treat multiple diseases.
CraniUS meets the Build Our Future Grant Pilot Program’s eligibility requirement that grants be matched by outside funding. The company has raised over $24M to date and a Series B raise is underway.
