New York City’s historic trolley terminal has a green future ahead as the counterpart to the popular Highline destination – The Lowline, a Kickstarter project launched in 2012, is attempting to turn a forgotten piece of New York history into the world’s first underground park through solar technology.
The century-old former trolley station located below the Lower East Side could potentially become an acre of underground oasis in one of the city’s most populous neighborhoods. The Lowline team has raised more than $55,000 of its $200,000 goal, which will go toward constructing the Lowline Lab, a long-term solar device testing laboratory and public exhibition to test and display the team’s vision.
This celebration of history with modern technology is motivated by the city’s need for green space, a love of history and inspiring technology, according to the Lowline Kickstarter page. Solar panels would collect sunlight on the rooftops surrounding the Lowline, which gets reflected down to the street level and directed underground through tubes.
All the natural light collected above ground allows for a public gathering space full of different plant species and trees, a bonafide underground botanical garden.
