Steven G. Huter, the Director for the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) and Research Associate at the University of Oregon received the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award from the Internet Society. Dedicated to ensuring the use, evolution, and open development of the Internet, the Internet Society presented the award to Huter for his decades of work globally strengthening partnership, infrastructure, and expertise on the Internet.
The committee that selected Huter for the award was comprised of former award winners who put particular emphasis on candidates that support and enable others, as well as their own contributions. For these reasons, Mr. Huter received the award thanks to, “his leadership and personal contributions at the Network Startup Resource Center that enabled countless others to develop the Internet in more than 120 countries.”
The NSRC formally began in 1992 in order to give technical assistance to those setting up networks in developing areas of the world in order to support scientific collaboration. Huter joined the center in 1993, and led the implementation and development of programs giving equipment, expertise, and training to people across North and South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Africa.
The award was presented to him by Internet Society CEO and President Kathy Brown during the 102nd meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) held in Montreal, 14-20 July 2018. Huter also received a crystal engraved globe and a $20,000 honorarium.
