Humana, a health insurance company based in Louisville, Kentucky, has made health and wellness a top priority. Through Go365, its wellness and rewards program, close to 5 million members are building healthier lives as a result of behavioral economics and actuarial science that the company has embraced.

Go365’s wellness programs serve to spur employee engagement in healthy activities that includes The Go365 National Step Challenge which promotes employee wellness all across the U.S. In the Challenge two or more Go365 members compete to achieve the highest team average step count. To appreciate the magnitude of what the contest achieved, last year’s winning teams collectively reached 8.6 billion steps. This led to one million meal donations to a local food bank of Feeding America® in each team’s name.

Jeff Reid, senior vice president of Humana Wellness Solutions, expressed his enthusiasm about the two-fold impact that the Challenge has on both health and hunger. “Humana is committed to improving the health of the communities we serve and we’re excited to see our clients achieving their best health.  By moving for a cause, participants of the step challenge are helping to fight food insecurity with each step taken, so everybody wins,” he said.

Go365 strives for the highest level of employee engagement and that was achieved in last year’s competition when over five thousand teams participated. This and other programs overseen by Go365 are run with partners like Avidon Health, a New Jersey based wellness-company comprised of behavior change experts that utilize digitally based cognitive behavior change tools.

Healthy employees lead to fewer health care claims and lower overall health care costs. Humana Go365 in collaboration with partners like Avidon Health work very hard to keep employees motivated.  Therefore, incentives play a big part in maintaining engagement—that is done via “points” or “bucks” being earned by members that are redeemable at the Go365 Mall.

“In our 10+ year relationship providing Humana Go365 with cognitive behavior change programs, we have been consistently impressed with their ability to creatively and meaningfully engage communities in healthy behaviors and activities. Humana Go365 is making a real difference in population health,” said President Kurt Atherton.
