The four honorees for Google’s 2017 Material Design Awards were announced on September 13th. Entering its third year, this year’s awards was the first to have the nomination process open to the public.
Material Design is a visual language that leverages science and technology with more classical tenants of design. The award for Brand Expressiveness went to Blinkist, Interaction Design to Eventbrite Organizer, Platform Adaptiveness to NPR One, and the award for Innovation awarded to momondo.
Summaries of the winners:
Brand Expressiveness: Blinkist expanded brand identify using typography, iconography, motion, and a user-friendly presentation through whitespace and simple text labels, presenting the user with 15-minute summaries of non-fiction bestselling books.
Interaction Design: Eventbrite, known for their event technology platform, extended their technology to event organizers with the Eventbrite Organizer app, streamlining ticket purchases, scanning and checking in attendees, and featuring customized interactions for onboarding. The actual design of the app aids the streamlining process, giving all of these options and functions to an event organizer in just a few touches.
Platform Adaptiveness: NPR One’s created an app to perform the same tasks across several smart devices such as phones, smartwatches, or cars.
Innovation: Momondo, uses animations, imagery, and use of motion to build an interface that takes classic elements and uses them in new ways to give users a complete search experience for comparing and booking hotels and flights.
