Between rapidly-changing social media trends and the uncertainty of the future prompted by COVID-19, perhaps the most interesting thing happening in fashion is the People’s Beauty Taste Awards using artificial intelligence to judge the entire competition. In total 20 winners were announced in categories reflecting the greatest beauty trends during 2020 like ‘natural self-care’, ‘social media’, and ‘mask-friendly’.

Sephora AI Beauty Assistant Glamai, an AI beauty search and recommendation service, was the sole judge of the 2020 competition. Using Mycelebs’ Keytalk, publicly-available beauty data made by product users themselves was gathered, serving to sidestep industry beauty experts and their possible personal biases.

Tapping into both social media and the internet within the United States, Glamai used data from make-up articles, beauty product reviews, and cosmetic trends. AI was then used to select the winners in over 70 awards. The outcomes reflected highly detailed beauty tastes, as well as capturing marginalized public activities in categories such as ‘Products approved by BOTH YouTubers and subscribers’ and ‘Moisturizers to prevent ‘maskne’ for acne-prone skin’.

Glamai’s complete findings and the full outcomes of the awards can be read in full as part of the 2020 US Beauty Taste Trend Report.
