Free Programming Training and Housing in New York City Part of Program
According to a recent study conducted by the American Association of University Women, computing jobs held by women have decreased from 35 percent in 1990 to just 26 percent in 2013. As women constitute a large majority of tech consumers, the opinions of women are seen as having a significant role through their influence on purchase decisions that has an impact on the overall economic health of tech companies. Acknowledging this shortage in female engineers, Etsy, a leading online marketplace for handmade items, is collaborating with the Recurse Center (formerly known as the HackerSchool) to fund and encourage women interested in writing open source software and mastering programming.
The Recurse Center is now accepting applications on a rolling basis. Beginning on August 17th, four “batches” of participants will engage in a free, 12-week program based in New York City. Along with mentorship from over 500 alumni and programming experts, women and underrepresented individuals participating in the program are also eligible to receive up to $7,000 in need-based living-expense grants.
The dates for each batch are as follows:
*Fall I 2015 | August 17 – November 5, 2015
*Fall II 2015 | September 28 – December 17, 2015
*Winter I 2015 | November 9, 2015 – February 4, 2016
*Winter II 2016 | January 4 – March 24, 2016
Etsy is just one of several sponsors supporting the Recurse Center including Juniper Networks, betaworks, Fog Creek Software, Perka and stripe. These companies provide the necessary funding for minority grants and the Recurse Center”s free 12-week program. If you’re interested in getting involved in programming, applications for upcoming batches are available at https://www.recurse.com/apply?r=homepage
