With optimism slowly rising due to a steady nationwide vaccine rollout, many industry leaders are assessing the pandemic’s aftermath—and looking for guidance on how best to position their companies for the future. This includes the electric vehicle and the emerging autonomous vehicle industries that global investment firm Drake Star Partners recently addressed in their report titled, “State of the Advanced Mobility Industry Report 2021”.
“2020 was a year like no other with COVID-19 having a profound impact on the automobile industry,” said Vitaly Golomb, partner, Drake Star Partners. “Electric vehicles look to regain momentum as a new U.S. administration commits to an environmental focus, while autonomous vehicles face a more challenging path ahead”.
The 164 page report delves into the factors impacting those industries, both positively and negatively. Extensive analysis is offered, providing a range of insights such as the uptrend in online car sales, reflected in a study of consumer comfort with that type of purpose, currently reaching 61% versus 32% pre-pandemic.
The report also chooses winners and losers in the automotive and mobility space as economies emerge from the pandemic. The winners include: electrification, private mobility, last-mile delivery, autonomous cargo transportation, digital platforms, and dealership tools. The losers are seen to be: automotive supply chain, shared micro-mobility, ride sharing, passenger AV and public transportation.
The report is presented in three sections, the first two focus on the state of the electric vehicle and the autonomous vehicle industries. The third, The Advanced Mobility Almanac, is a deep dive into the more than 50 global corporations working on electric and autonomous vehicles. The report also lays out how tech and venture capital have a part in the recovery now underway.
