This past January General Motors Chairwoman and CEO Mary Barra laid out in her CES 2021 keynote GM’s vision for the future, committing to produce 30 new global electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025. GM concluded that millions of EVs will be needed on the road to attain a zero-emissions future and Barra shared their part in meeting that goal. Then this past week, the utility AES Indiana announced that they are partnering with electric fleet and subscription service company Motor to eliminate or lower hurdles to consumer EV adoption.
“We are excited to partner with AES Indiana to accelerate electric car adoption by providing a simplified customer experience,” says Motor’s President Praveen Kathpal. “Motor facilitates the expanded use of electric cars in a way that helps utilities keep the transition affordable for all customers and benefits reliability on the grid.”
Motor will focus on an improved end-to-end experience for electric car users, while AES Indiana will create an infrastructure to optimize charging times while also reducing utility rates in Indiana. Their collective efforts are intended to make EV purchase and use more convenient and less expensive.
Motor’s role begins with its three primary electric vehicle offerings: electric car subscription services for individual customers, a digital electric car purchasing platform that will increase sales for Central Indiana automobile dealers, and a community car sharing solution for workplaces, apartments, and campuses.
For AES Indiana’s part, they recently filed a plan with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) seeking approval of a new electric car charging rate. The critical aspect of their plan is the promotion of broader adoption of EV’s without an immediate need to build additional infrastructure. If approved, any electric car owner in Indiana will receive a one-time charger rebate and recurring annual incentives for their ongoing participation in the Motor program.
“This partnership with Motor provides a broad array of grid, economic and environmental benefits and is an innovative approach toward electrifying transportation, while creating benefits for all customers, even if they do not drive an electric cars,” stated AES Indiana’s President and CEO, Kristina Lund.
Motor, AES Indiana and other companies are aligning with leaders such as General Motors that have embraced sustainability and are developing reliable, greener, and smarter energy solutions that consumers will value. They are setting the stage for EVs to have a market share through bold and clear steps that includes simplifying the ways in which consumers are able to accept EVs in their daily lives.
