Millennials continue to embrace new technologies, while consumers overall show hesitancy in a range of areas, indicating more growth remains for disruptive technologies as barriers come down. This is reported from Global X ETFs study called “Consumer Adoption of Disruptive Technologies,” offering insight on a range of areas impacting technology adoption.
While online shopping has been widely adopted as an alternative to physical retail shopping by consumers, 20 percent of individuals surveyed would rather only purchase items that they see in person first. Also, respondents are even less likely to purchase IoT technologies or smart home devices such as security cameras or climate control that can be controlled from their smart phone.
Millennials are the most willing to adopt robots that perform tasks such as home cleaning, caring for the elderly, and conducting medical procedures or operations. They also the most positive when considering how technology will affect the workforce.
In contrast baby boomers are the most negative when asked how robots and AI will impact their job.
“What stands out is that we’re still very clearly in the early stages of these technologies fully disrupting the legacy segments of the economy,” said Jay Jacobs, head of research and strategy at Global X. “Technology has advanced at such a rapid pace that consumers are still familiarizing themselves with these revolutionary products. It’s incredibly exciting to see just how much more room there is to grow for these burgeoning industries.
