Sometimes a good deed is long in the making. For global entrepreneur and investor Dr. Charles Huang, the genesis of his $7.5 million donation to his local Methodist Hospital occurred decades ago. As a twenty year resident of Arcadia, California Dr. Huang wanted to express his appreciation for how well the hospital treated his family during the births of two of his children and recently his first grandchild.
Dr. Huang’s gift is the largest single gift to the hospital in its 119-year history. The donation will fund a new hybrid OR, furthering the hospital’s efforts to be recognized as a center of excellence for cardiac surgery.
“I’ve always been impressed with the level of care and services at Methodist Hospital for both my family and several of our employees,” Dr. Huang said. “It’s important for everyone to support local organizations like Methodist Hospital that do so much for our community. We want to do all in our power to help expand needed health care services at the local level.”
The signing ceremony at the hospital was held on June 27th during which the hospital’s leadership expressed their appreciation for the sizeable donation and Dr. Huang’s contribution to the community.
“We are so fortunate and pleased with this generous gift from Dr. Huang, which will be used toward the construction of a hybrid operating room,” said Mike Driebe, President of the Methodist Hospital Foundation.
Dr. Huang has had many successes over a long career. In 2016 he founded Pasaca Capital Inc., the Pasadena-based multi-billion-dollar private equity company. That achievement came from work early in his career that included having participated in and led over 20 IPOs for Asian and global companies, making him a stand-out pioneer in Chinese equity research. These successes led him to be recognized as having “the Midas touch” in stock selections and stock market calls.
Originally from China, Dr. Huang’s donation reflects both his appreciation of his adopted home and his desire to promote community wellness. The funding of the advanced OR technology supports the hospital’s top medical teams comprised of clinicians who seek to meet the complex needs of patients.
“A hybrid operating room is an advanced procedural space that combines a traditional operating room with an image guided interventional suite,” said Bala Chandrasekhar, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the hospital. “With this incredible donation, we will be able to create an OR that will include a combination of equipment and services that allows for highly complex, advanced surgical procedures.”
Dr. Huang’s donation is one step of many in the social arena that began in 2020 when he founded the Charles Huang Foundation. Its mission is to “bolster, enable, and inspire global development in education, health, and innovation.” His other donation recipients include San Francisco’s Chinese Hospital and a pledge to create the Charles Huang Foundation Research Fund at the University of California, Los Angeles.
His social endeavors led him to be aptly named “Philanthropreneur of the Year” by the California State Assembly. In addition, Pasaca Capital was named “Business of the Year” for its extraordinary contributions to the State of California and the world.
