Ben Franklin Technology Partners is an economic development program devoted to assisting technology-based companies in Pennsylvania. The independent not for profit serves a key role in increasing economic growth and technology innovation in the state.
Since its inception in 1983, BFTP has provided capital, resources, funding, expertise and networking opportunities to both start-up and established companies. It maintains four regional headquarters and six satellite offices across the state.
BFTP has had a measurable impact on the economy of Pennsylvania. Since 1989, the program has boosted the state’s economy by $23.5 billion, has produced more than 51,000 jobs in client firms and an additional 89,000 jobs externally, according to its 2015 impact statement.
BFTP directly invests in promising technology-oriented companies, funding their critical commercialization activities and growth needs. BFTP high investment standards often serve as a key endorsement that enables companies to attract the follow-on investment. BFTP also invests in select seed/early-stage PA venture funds, as well as providing support for angel groups.
In order to support the success of entrepreneurs, the BFTP provides them with both technical and business expertise. Hands-on assistance includes reviews of business plans, technical assessments, intellectual property counsel, marketing advice, operations and fund-raising strategies. The BFTP also provides a networking opportunities via a range of events and spaces to connect entrepreneurs, angel investors, venture capitalists, universities, labs, incubators, assistance and development programs, etc.
The BTFP has won the Excellence in Tech-Based Economic Development Award by the International Economic Development Council and the Excellence in Technology-Led Economic Development Award by the U.S. Department of Commerce/Economic Development Administration.
