Pittsburgh and Carnegie Melon University (CMU) put a major marker down in Artificial Intelligence this week when it was announced that the Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence (BCAI) is establishing a lab in the city, via an $8 million investment in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University.
It will be the BCAI’s fourth location and it will conduct advanced research in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as part of its mission to partner with leading institutions to accelerate AI research. This approach seeks to address the widening gap between industry need and available talent. BCAI’s collaborations around the world advance AI technology and support Bosch’s four key sectors: Mobility Solutions, Consumer Goods, Industrial Technology, and Energy and Building Technology. It also provides the opportunity to train the next generation of AI experts.
In addition Zico Kolter, a leading AI expert, will join Bosch as chief scientist of AI, while continuing to serve as CMU faculty. Kolter, an assistant professor at CMU’s School of Computer Science (SCS), will oversee multi-million dollar research projects at CMU, while also contributing to Bosch’s global R&D efforts as a principal member of the BCAI. It is expected that Bosch will grow its Pittsburgh Technology Center through the addition of up to 20 AI experts by the end of 2019.
“We’re excited to establish BCAI Research in Pittsburgh with Zico Kolter as part of the long-term collaboration between CMU and Bosch,” said Christoph Peylo, global head of BCAI in a press statement. “CMU, with its tradition as one of the leading institutions in AI research, is an important pillar in BCAI’s mission to develop safe, robust and secure AI for Bosch products and services.”
CMU will receive more than $8 million from BCAI for research through 2023. Bosch and CMU’s partnering relationship extends back to 1999, and has been a contributor to Pittsburgh’s growing tech community.
