The 2026 SPIE Startup Challenge offers entrepreneurs in the optics and photonics fields an opportunity for cash prizes as well as broad industry exposure to advance their business models.
Applications are now officially open for the 2026 SPIE Startup Challenge, a premier startup competition dedicated to companies advancing the field of optics and photonics.
Set against the backdrop of SPIE Photonics West 2026 in San Francisco, the challenge gives emerging innovators the opportunity to pitch breakthrough technologies, compete for cash prizes, and connect directly with investors and industry leaders.
The event is hosted by SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics, founded in 1955..
A Launchpad for Photonics Entrepreneurs
Now in its 16th year, the SPIE Startup Challenge showcases young companies using light-based technologies to address real-world problems. The competition provides more than cash awards: it delivers visibility, validation, and direct access to a global network of investors and potential customers.
Prizes of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500, sponsored by founding partner Jenoptik, will go to the top three finalists.
Cellino Biotech, Double Helix Optics, PhotoniCare, and Circle Optics, and In A Blink are some of the prior event participants that have gone on to notable success.
The startup competition provided an early boost to these companies, enabling them to achieve further growth and secure support.
Honoring Innovation and Leadership
The 2026 challenge will introduce a new honor: the SPIE Jay Kumler Innovation Award. This award recognizes the late Jay Kumler, former president of Jenoptik North America and longtime SPIE Fellow, who was instrumental in shaping the Startup Challenge and mentoring the next generation of photonics leaders.
Selected by the judges, the award will go to the finalist who best embodies Kumler’s commitment to innovation, leadership, and advancing the field. The judges evaluate the teams based on the strength of their business case, financial outlook, and competitive advantages.
Multiple Industries Impacted
Photonics is a core part of the transformative advances now occurring across multiple industries. It ranges from medical imaging to high-speed communications to quantum computing, AR/VR/MR, and autonomous vehicles. All serve light-based technologies that provide solutions shaping the future.
The SPIE Startup Challenge focuses on two key categories: photonics-enabled healthcare and deep tech. A panel of industry experts, including venture capitalists and business development professionals, will evaluate the business models presented by the finalists. They will give constructive feedback to the presenters to improve their pitches and go-to-market strategies.
Applications and Deadline
Submissions may require a brief company overview, a description of the technology or product, and a business pitch summary. Selected applicants will be notified regarding the finals, which will take place on January 20, 2026, during SPIE Photonics West at the Moscone Center. Finalists will present their pitches on stage before optics and photonics professionals.
Entrepreneurs interested in participating must complete an online application by October 7, 2025.
Great Opportunity
With a base of engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs, SPIE has invested over $25 million in scholarships, grants, and educational initiatives through conferences, publications, and professional development over the past five years.
The 2026 SPIE Startup Challenge offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to advance their technologies into successful businesses.
With prizes, mentorship, global exposure, and the introduction of the Jay Kumler Innovation Award, this year’s competition offers significant value for participants.
