With the application of artificial intelligence (AI) growing every day, ideas that were science fiction just five years ago are becoming part of everyday life. Market intelligence firm Tractica assessed this phenomenon in a new report, projecting the future uses of AI in the automotive industry.

Today, the automotive industry is already invested in the use of AI to not only mimic human actions, but augment them as well. The report projects the market for AI technology in this industry will grow substantially from 2016’s number of $404 million to $14 billion by 2025.

Tractica principal analyst Keith Kirkpatrick states that the usage of AI in the automotive industry is not just limited to cars that drive themselves, but that, “Suppliers and automakers realize that AI can also be used to make life in the car more convenient and personalized, for both the driver and the passengers, in addition to enabling greater automation for a range of areas including vehicle maintenance, customer service, fleet management, and navigation, among others.”

The full report, titled “Artificial Intelligence for Automotive Applications”, details 15 key use cases for AI in the industry, divided by regions of the globe. Beyond self-driving cars, the report lists truck platooning, gesture recognition, automated on-road customer service, predictive maintenance, vehicular data security and networking, and several other areas with the highest revenue potentials.
