As another step forward in the revitalization of the city of Newark, the Gateway Gallery and Studio Space has transformed its formerly temporary pop-up art space into a permanent arts hub in the Gateway Center Complex. Expanding the once 14,000 sq ft space into a 50,000 sq ft superstructure is the culmination of the The Gateway Project, organized to enhance programs and opportunities for multidisciplinary artists.
“We are thrilled to be expanding opportunities for artists and creative businesses not only at a local level, but by opening more doors with connections nationally and internationally as well,” said Rebecca Jampol, co-director of The Gateway Project. “The Gateway Project will be a resourceful arts complex for the City of Newark, comparable to that which one would find in New York City.”
To announce the completion of this dynamic space for art and business opportunities, the gallery’s first exhibition, titled Color Polemics: Unpacking the Movement Toward Racial Equality and Identity in America, served as a ribbon cutting cermony and grand opening on April 30. Inspired by art created within the pre and post racial desegregation periods, the exhibition sheds light on a nonpartisan perspective of racial politics and social issues faced by integrated Americans.
In addition to rentable art studios and gallery space for large-scale exhibitions; the three-story facility attached to Newark’s Penn Station will include The Gateway Project Residency Program. This competitive program fosters artists whose work involves social engagemnt by providing temperature controlled studios, high speed WiFi connection, 24-hour access to secure studio spaces and gallery events allowing artists to network with members of the art industry.
“The Gateway Project has invigorated previously empty, underutilized space in the heart of downtown Newark,” said Jasmine Wahi, co-director of The Gateway Project. “The gallery and studios will play an important role in helping to continue moving forward the renaissance happening here in Newark. Art is inspiring and we are proud that our residency programs will have community outreach components in place to engage students, residents, workforces and visitors year-round.”
