With concern for the care that millions of Americans living with a serious illness receive, the winners of the first round of The John A. Hartford Foundation Tipping Point Challenge for healthcare innovation was announced by The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), an organization dedication to increasing the availability of quality healthcare in America. The Challenge is the cornerstone of a five-year campaign called Project Tipping Point, run by CAPC, to expand patient access to principles and practices of palliative care.
The first Tipping Point Challenge called for health care organizations to enable clinicians in all medical specialties to build the skills necessary to care for patients with serious illnesses. Of the 1500 health care organizations that participated, 24 organizations won and received a $1000 honorarium for their institution, as well as national and local press to promote their company.
Participating organizations gain access to CAPC staff for courses, tools, metrics, and technical assistance, as well as national experts and leaders in the healthcare field. The second Challenge will be announced soon, and organizations will compete to develop healthcare innovation in the area of serious illness over the course of two years.
“The enthusiasm and heightened activity of health care organizations across the country to rapidly enhance skills that are not usually the focus of training in medical school, is a testament to the thirst and extraordinary need to improve the quality of care provided to people living with serious illness. The competition also shows a very productive collaboration between clinicians and their C-Suite leaders that energizes, inspires, and demonstrates high levels of leadership,” said Diane E. Meier, MD, director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care in a press statement.
