The circular economy, which incorporates the concept of reusing and efficiency into previously single-use resources, is becoming increasingly popular as many manufacturers recognize the benefits of circular economy solutions. A new report from Navigant, titled “Circular Economy Solutions for Modernizing Manufacturing,” examines how circular economy innovation offers strategic and operational advantage for manufacturers in the current global climate.

While previous economic models took a linear approach to products and viewed products as beneficial for short-term consumption, the circular economy treats products as reusable, reparable, recyclable, and even biodegradable in some cases. Using this approach, Navigant explains that manufacturers can achieve cost efficiencies and ensure product innovation while reducing the carbon footprint of operations and production.

In the report, Navigant suggest that leaders should start establishing priorities and creating circular economy initiatives while organizations engage with both business partners and customers to maintain establishment in the changing market. Transitioning to a circular economy requires that businesses fundamentally rethink and retool current practices and business models, yet through increasing awareness, manufacturers can pick and choose the optimal approach.

“The manufacturing industry faces increasing cost pressures and heightened risk exposure from commodity price volatility, customer preferences, regulatory environments, and geopolitical conditions,” says Rafael Go, senior research analyst at Navigant Research. “While adopting a circular economy model can increase manufacturers’ exposure to risks, it presents an opportunity for positive economic growth combined with positive environmental social impact.”
