The Gen.G Foundation gave a big boost to underrepresented groups in the fields of gaming, e-sports, entrepreneurship, journalism and content creation with the announcement of their first scholarship winners. Eleven college students were chosen from an applicant pool comprised of women, people of color and low income family members enrolled in a U.S. university or college in one of the designated areas.
The scholarship program announcement follows the global sports organization Gen.G’s commitment made earlier this year of $1 million for the development of future leaders in the gaming industry. It entails $100,000 to be awarded annually for 10 years through the Gen.G Foundation that has Silicon Valley Bank, University of Kentucky, Eastern Michigan University, and Bumble as supporting partners.
Each student was awarded $10,000 to cover part of their academic tuition for this year, as well as receiving mentorship and guidance in their career development.
“The best part of this process was getting to know these students and hearing their stories,” said Gina Chung Lee, VP of Brand at Gen.G. “We will continue to prioritize building out a diverse and supportive network of people who are passionate about careers in gaming and digital media. More to come in 2021!”
