Heralded as a day of innovation for celebration, Stevens Institute of Technology on May 3rd hosted its Annual Innovation Expo that serves as a campus-wide showcase of Stevens’ research and innovation accomplishments.  One highlight of the day was an investor-funded business competition which awarded $10,000 to the winning team.  The festivities also included lectures from distinguished leaders from industry and academia and exhibitions of ground-breaking research projects and inventions by Stevens’ students and faculty.

The winner from the Elevator Pitch competition, receiving $10,000, was CerebroSense(TM) Brain Pulsatility Measurement Device.  Dr. Jean Zu, dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering & Science presented the award to the student team of Maria De Abreu Pineda, Andrew Falcone and David Ferrara. In collaboration with Dr. Glen Atlas ’82, an anesthesiologist and adjunct clinical professor at Stevens, the three seniors found a better way to measure and report brain changes in real time — without actually touching the brain.  The win at the Annual Expo follows their recent first prize win for their senior design project in an undergraduate-poster competition at Johnson & Johnson’s 2017 Engineering Showcase.

Second place awarded $5,000 to SoPure Water, a solar-powered water purification system for developing countries that was presented by students: Maria Gomez-Botero, Megan Kohr, Kristina Miller, Christina Sciarra, and Danai Argyri.  Third place awarded $2,500 to Kne3-D (TM) a post-operative knee rotation measurement device that was presented by students:  Nickita Alexiades, Juan Carlos, Ryan Mulligan, and Colin Navickas.
