In addition to building a sales team, other activities can be undertaken that help grow sales
One of the most difficult decisions facing a small business owner is hiring others to handle the sales of the company. Even though many sales representatives work off commission, they typically require a base salary that can be a challenge for a small business trying to grow to the next level.
A wrong hire in a sales team can be particularly painful because the small business still carries the individual’s salary with poor sales performance, while those funds could have had an impact elsewhere in the company.
Before a hiring decision is made, a small business can first grow sales using a few different approaches. In addition, some of these approaches may help the small business by addressing fundamentals that may later help with a new hire.
The six key sales strategies for a small business to achieve their sales goals in a competitive market are:
1. Increasing the company’s online presence by using digital marketing strategies. This includes setting up campaigns for a target market, while also giving a company’s products and services greater visibility.
One example is using google ads that may yield sales with a lower budget commitment than the salary of a salesperson. Another example is to outsource the sales function to companies that now specialize in using LinkedIn databases to identify potential clients, qualify them and then work with the client to close the sale.
Email marketing is another tool in the marketing toolbox that leads to greater sales. The content and format of an email newsletter can be customized to reach different segments of the company’s customer base.
2. Offering a customer loyalty program and/or referral program. The latter gives existing customers rewards for steering new customers, while also strengthening their bond which fends off other sales solicitations,
3. Providing high quality customer service that makes customers happy and leads to a great customer experience, builds customer trust and increases the likelihood of higher return purchases, while creating testimonial clients that every sales approach values.
4. Offering discounts and promotions to current clients leads to increased customer purchases. Somewhere it is said, “Your next best customer is your current customer”, meaning that companies should learn more about their existing customers’ needs, particularly because they already have a favorable opinion of current products or services.,
5. Gathering and analyzing customer data can give a small business owner valuable insight about potential customers. The company first needs to select the means to use data collection such as surveys, email newsletters’ opens etc.
Data provides the details that enables owners to establish better ways to find new leads to potential buyers as well as assess current customer satisfaction.
6. Using an artificial intelligence sales system provides real time contact information that a small business owner can use, as well as any staff member. These AI sales platforms are typically tied to a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software that brings enormous efficiency to the sales process.
Overall, for a small business to grow sales they need to set up both a sales and marketing plan that are part of the business plan. This establishes pathways to go forward. The six offered approaches are fundamental to those areas.
The small business owner needs to select the ones that show proven results for their small business model and fulfills their business goals.
