Samsung SDI is giving automobile buyers a taste of the future by unveiling the materials for a high-capacity, quick-charging battery along with innovative new battery products for electric vehicles at the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). SDI’s exhibit is built around the idea of the future of electric vehicles performing in the same capacity as today’s traditional engines and car starts today.
“We will lead the popularization of electric vehicles by developing products based on cutting-edge technology which will in an optimum manner meet the needs of our customers and the market,” Samsung SDI executive vice president of automotive business and ESS business, Jeong Seh-woong said. “We will continue to lead global market as the world’s top technology company providing total solutions for EV battery applications.”
Samsung SDI’s battery lineup at NAIAS includes possible cells for both electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), with some EV cells holding energy densities great enough for 600 kilometers of travel after a 20 minute charge. The new battery innovations impact markets beyond electric vehicles, with SDI’s new 21700 standard cylindrical batteries maximizing output and battery life for electric power tools and Energy Storage Systems.
NAIAS is showcasing over 180 brands outside of Samsung SDI, with suppliers and automakers introducing new breakthroughs alongside universities and tech startups from January 13th to the 21st.
