American Entrepreneurship Today is pleased to present our Q&A series with key participants of the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) provides business support, networking opportunities, information, advocacy, and recognition of technology companies and their leaders. Founded in 1996, NJTC’s member companies work together to support their own enterprises while advancing New Jersey’s status as a leading technology center in the United States.

What are some of the trends in New Jersey technology that are impacting the state?

Currently we are seeing waves of innovation in Medtech and Fintech. Provisions of the Affordable Care Act has challenged the healthcare industry to lower cost and improve outcomes by using technology, as a result we are seeing a great deal of activity in this area. The advancements in financial technology are not as openly visible as the changes in healthcare but every bit as significant. And with New Jersey proximity to the world’s financial center we are in an ideal spot to service that industry.

The NJTC provides opportunities for business leaders to meet and exchange ideas with one another; we provide access to industry knowledge and sources of funding.

What are NJTC’s signature initiatives?

The NJTC’s activities in providing access to funding sources for entrepreneurs are what the Council is best known for. Each year we hold nearly 100 activities designed to educate the individual, grow the enterprise and promote region as a technology destination.

Technology and entrepreneurship are often intertwined. How does NJTC support entrepreneurship in New Jersey?

The NJTC is affiliated with the NJTC Venture Fund and New Jersey Angel Network. Currently the Venture Fund is fully invested but the NJ Angel Network is actively investing. Some of the most popular events we run each year provide opportunities for startup’s to show off their innovations.

Does NJTC influence or educate New Jersey legislators about solving issues related to technology? What recent or future legislation might be helpful to the NJ tech community?

Each year we host a trip to Washington and set up meeting with our legislators, we work closely with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and we have a seat on the Governors’ Innovation New Jersey Board.
