Innovation focused on pedestrian safety is being showcased at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America Annual Meeting underway in Detroit from June 4th to 7th. Applied informatics company Iteris, Inc. and Siemens Intelligent Traffic Systems have collaborated to demonstrate pedestrian detection technology that warns drivers in advance of pedestrians on a crosswalk.

Iteris’ and Siemens’ efforts are focused on the 24% of pedestrian fatalities that occur at intersections nationally, according to the FHWA.  Iteris’ PedTrax™ video detection capabilities and Siemens’ latest V2X solution work in combination to generate the advance warning to drivers whose vehicles are equipped with onboard units capable of receiving a dedicated short-range communications signal– which then produces a video and audio warning in the vehicles. The warning is tied to a Siemens Sitraffic ESCoS roadside unit (RSU) that meets U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration specifications.

Todd Kreter, senior vice president and general manager for Roadway Sensors at Iteris, spoke about the upcoming showcase in a press release, saying, “Iteris has been defining the pathway to connected vehicles for more than 20 years and this demonstration with Siemens is further testament to our dedication to advancing V2X safety technology throughout our business.”

Siemens Intelligent Traffic Systems are currently in place in a number cities including Tampa, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
