Navigant Research released a report on July 18th that examined and forecasted regional markets for highly automated light duty passenger vehicles (LDVs), medium, and heavy duty commercial vehicles. The report forecasts the introduction of highly automated LDVs in 2020, and steady growth through 2025.
Navigant Research reports provide benchmarking and market research in rapidly-changing, highly regulated industries. The report, titled, “Market Data: Automated Driving Vehicles”, details the regional markets for commercial and consumer vehicles with highly automated driving capability from 2017 to 2035, segmented into three scenarios including forecasts on light duty vehicle populations.
Sam Abuelsamid, senior research analyst at Navigant Research, commented on the advances in the industry in a press release, saying, “Automotive OEMs, suppliers, and technology companies such as Waymo and Apple are investing billions of dollars in the hopes of commercializing automated driving technologies. For the companies involved, they see potential new revenue streams from the mobility and data services that are enabled while at the same time building a market for safer and more efficient vehicles.”
Several manufacturers already offer low-cost Level 1 systems in commercial and consumer vehicle segments, with highly automated Level 3 and 4 systems still undergoing extensive texting in advance of deployment. The benefits of the technology are potentially far-reaching, increasing efficiency and convenience in on-demand vehicle fleets and increasing the safety of long-range driving.
