Navigant Research released their latest white paper on November 28th addressing trends in automated driving, mobility as a service (MaaS), and electrification, as they specifically relate to the challenges facing major cities’ in achieving sustainability. The paper, titled, Redefining Mobility Services in Cities”, forecasts that automated driving will debut in 2020, and then moving toward rapid growth as early as 2025. This will shift the economics of mobility while at the same time providing greater safety and convenience for users.

“If implemented correctly, the convergence of automated driving, electrification, and connected services provide the potential for enormous societal benefits in the coming decades,” said Navigant Research principal research analyst Sam Abuelsamid. “Over time, a city of three million residents could reduce its vehicle population by two-thirds using an automated MaaS model, which presents a shift away from personally owned modes of transportation toward mobility solutions that are consumed as a service.”

The paper outlines important topics that stakeholder groups need to address in the mobility service field. It includes Navigant Research developing a study to quantify the impact of high-level adoption of driverless cars within a city. The conclusion is that on-demand, automated vehicle fleets with clean powertrain technology are competitive with or less expensive than transportation choices today.
