Even within industries where women are a majority, such as real estate, healthcare, and education, representation is still lacking at the executive level, reveals a new survey from Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC. Over 34 percent of respondents from female-dominated industries believe that women still face a “glass ceiling,” partly due to executives in these industries being 75 percent more likely to be male.
Majority of working adults believe that female representation in the executive level is important, but many acknowledge that women still have to work harder than men to earn that position. While open dialogue, mentorship, and training are all critical to ensuring that women are promoted, 40 percent of respondents say their company lacks formal leadership training programs or sessions.
The survey found that men are 20 percent more likely to ask for a raise and 32 percent are more likely to state their ambitions to hold an executive level position one day. Additionally, while the majority of both men and women are hesitant about asking for a raise even if they feel they meet the qualifications, women are still less likely than men to do so.
“Women in real estate face an upward mobility challenge, and it’s our responsibility to help correct the gender leadership gap,” says Zoe Horneck, VP of product marketing and communications at Coldwell Banker in a press statement. “Our brand is supporting current and aspiring women leaders by providing formal management training, online courses and in-person networking opportunities at events including our annual Leadership Summit and Gen Blue® conference.”
