Combine simple head-up displays like Google Glass and complex holographic display technologies with Internet connection and you’ll create smart augmented reality glasses – a melting pot of the latest display technologies fused into an accessory. It allows users to layer elements on top of the real world, creating an augmented reality (AR) product that attracts a large, diverse market of tech lovers.
“The smart glasses market is enjoying a period of tremendous innovation,” says research director Aditya Kaul. “Despite Google’s decision to go back to the drawing board and redesign Google Glass, other vendors have ramped up their activity significantly, with some releasing second- or third-generation HUD-type smart AR glasses products and others stretching the boundaries of AR by providing 3D or 4D features. Notable innovators in this sector include Vuzix, Epson, Sony, Meta, Atheer Labs, DAQRI, and Recon Instruments.”
Tractica, a market intelligence firm on technology, released a report titled “Smart Augmented Reality Glasses” predicting a worldwide increase in shipments of smart AR glasses from 114,000 in 2015 to almost 5.4 million by 2020.
