China continues their lead in the Global Utility Electric Smart Meter market through Q1 2018, with over 496 million tracked installations, or 68.4% of all tracked installations anywhere in the world, according to a new report from Navigant Research. Japan and South Korea also engage in large-scale projects and high-volume deployments, and India’s market is beginning to pick up with the emergence of multimillion-meter tenders driving volumes within the market.
This report, “Global AMI Tracker 2Q18”, additionally found that small and mid-scale AMI deployments are propagating in Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, with other regions struggling due to financial barriers to entry. The North American market for Smart Meters has several new project announcements, especially for smaller public utilities, while much of Western Europe already has large-scale deployments underway.
Michael Kelly, a research analyst with Navigant Research, spoke about the report’s findings, saying, “As expected, China’s State Grid Corporation of China has nearly concluded its nationwide smart meter rollout in 2018 in the midst of Southern Power Grid’s push toward higher deployment levels.”
The report tracks data related to meter manufacturers, global customer endpoints, MDM vendors, systems integrators, and AMI communications vendors to provide a global analysis of utility smart meter projects. It also includes examinations of timeframes, technologies, and vendors for AMI deployment across the globe to provide a picture of the market’s development in key areas.
