Some amazing numbers about businesswomen of color were shared by author and strategic marketing consultant Claudia Newcorn, as part of the promotion of her book, “Zipline to Success: Fast-Track Marketing Strategies to Accelerate Your Sales & Profits”.

The number of women-owned firms increased by 45% in 2016 from the prior year, according to the 2016 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, with 79% of firms launched in the last nine years founded by females of color. From these figures, about 1.9 million firms are owned by African American women, while just less than 1.9 million belong to Latina women.

This surge in female startups, according to Newcorn, is due to women seeking to plot their own path in life and pursuing success by their own standards. In order to prevent these businesses and all others from joining the 80% of startups failing in their first 18 months, Newcorn leverages her decades of experience with companies like E&J Gallo and Gillette that she shares in her well-received book.

Helen Eldredge, a community manager at Trilogy at the Vineyards/Shea Homes, talked about her experience working with Newcorn, saying, “Whether conducting a focus group, developing advertising strategies, or assisting with planning our Grand Opening, Claudia’s analysis, insights, recommendations and guidance have been invaluable in helping us take a customer-focused approach to designing and marketing our luxury model homes.”

Newcorn focuses on topics that are integral to a business’ success including:

  • How companies can make sales, but still lose money
  • Why entrepreneurs should be personal with competitors
  • Where the highest amount of female startups are occurring
  • The most important thing to know when running or launching a business
  • How to make a large impact with a small marketing budget
